Using this bridge canal, Leonardo designed a water "overpass." Like a modern highway interchange, this design allows maritime traffic to flow in different directions. The first gate on the bridge acts as a temporary "dam."  As water enters through small openings in the second gate, it raises the water level, allowing the ship to float up onto the bridge canal.
